Mississauga, Ontario (Sept. 12, 2018) – Maple Reinders recently achieved Gold level certification under LEED® v4 for the Administration and Education Building at its City of Calgary Compost Facility project, making it the first project to certify under LEED v4 for BD+C New Construction in Canada. In addition to being North America’s largest and most advanced municipal, in-vessel biosolids and organics co-composting facility, it was the first composting facility to be delivered under the P3 model in Canada, and the first commercial building in Alberta to be registered under LEED Gold v4. LEED v4 is billed by the CaGBC as “driving big reductions in greenhouse gas emissions associated with building construction and operation and putting a stronger emphasis on human health.”
The Compost Facility has many sustainable design features built-in, including the use of stormwater recovered on site, instead of city water, for the composting process. This has the additional benefit of relieving strain on the sewer system during heavy rainfall. The Facility also has a focus on public education, offering school tours with a viewing gallery overlooking the composting facility, as well as an outdoor learning garden.
The Compost Facility project was delivered by Chinook Resource Management Group – a special purpose company of which Maple Reinders PPP Ltd. is a partner, along with Bird Construction – and is being operated by Maple Reinders’ subsidiary AIM Environmental Group.
